“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” – William Butler Yeats
This is exactly how I feel about my time with Lauren of The Rebel Academy. I look forward to our class sessions, unlike the days where I was filled with dread having to do math. Yes Algebra is the Devil’s work, but with Lauren’s help it’s way less scary. Thank you Lauren for your patience and making me feel that I am capable to still be able to learn, even at my age.”

Our Rebellious Approach to Instruction
What makes us rebellious? We individually tailor instruction for each of our students. We have no bureaucratic agenda, and we don’t answer to some larger agency. We go to students instead of making students come to us. We supply our students with textbooks, worksheets, and calculators. We also set up official testing when students are ready. We deliver private lessons and group classes. We also offer classes through community agencies for clients who want to earn their GED® or improve their English, and we have GED instruction available in Spanish. We also have online classes for math in both English and Spanish. We also have THE ONLY viable high school diploma option for Oregon reentry students, free, in the state. No other agency delivers instruction while breaking down barriers like we do.

Rebels with a Cause
We are The Rebel Academy, we hire Rebels. For example, tutors who served prison time. You read that right – our founder taught inside jails and prisons as college faculty for about 10 years. She had the honor and privilege of working alongside inmate tutors. Their work inside was not only inspiring, but heroic and life-changing for the most disenfranchised and “lost cause” students. Now, on the outside, she recruits tutors leaving prison to continue this work in the nonprofit world.
